Renaissance gold ring with an intaglio of warrior

A Renaissance gold ring set with a carnelian intaglio of a seated warrior.

Western Europe, second half of the 16th century.

The intaglio measures 1.2 x 1cm.

Weight 4.7 grams.

The intaglio is especially unusual as it is a Renaissance copy of a Roman intaglio, in this case making it a far rarer gem than its ancient equivalent. The gold ring is decorated in high Renaissance taste with a Roman style setting above a beaded border, the reverse of the setting is gadrooned and the shank decorated with carved foliage.
