Bartolomeo Gennari was born in Cento in 1594, the son of Benedetto and Giulia Bovi.

At a very young age he entered Guercino's workshop, which already belonged to his father, working together with his brother Ercole, Lorenzo Gennari, Benedetto Zallone, Matteo Loves and Paolo Antonio Barbieri.

During the course of his career he made numerous copies from the master's originals. He most probably took part in the works of Casa Pannini.
In 1630 he took Lorenzo Gennari's place as head of the workshop and always remained faithful to the master's style.

In 1632 he went to Modena with Guercino and Matteo Loves to paint the portraits of Duke Francesco I d'Este and Maria Farnese. From the 1630s onwards he started a flourishing production of his own works, including the Sposalizio della Vergine (1644, Modena, Galleria Estense), which shows his interest in Guido Reni's production.

After moving to Bologna in 1644 with the other members of his family, he died in 1661.
