Exceptional cylinder desk in plum veneer, herringbone pattern throughout.
The top is decorated with a vase in light and dark wood marquetry, engraved with fluting, gadroons, rosettes and handles from which rise leafy branches garnished with flowers.
The whole is framed by a compound, tinted fillet.
The cylinder stave is decorated with tinted half-cubes and colored wood.
The plum chevron bottom of the cylinder is decorated with a trompe l'oeil entablature of gadroons, fluting, garlands, rosettes, apron and ball feet.
A central escutcheon separates thirteen musical instruments: tambourine, trumpet, guitar, musette, flute, violin, oboe, clarinet, hurdy-gurdy, drum, lyre... framed by scores.
The whole set is framed by a stained double fillet with intertwined Greciques in the corners.
When the top is pulled out, the cylinder tilts back to reveal six curved drawers veneered with half-cubes framed by green-tinted fillets. One of these drawers has its original inkwells. Two secret drawers are concealed behind the lower drawers.
A large storage drawer opens under the top, decorated with foliate, floral and engraved scrolls, and framed by a green-tinted double fillet with intersecting grecques at the corners.
The sides are veneered with an entablature supporting a large vase embellished with flowering and tinted branches and birds, all engraved in trompe l'oeil and framed by a green-tinted fillet.
It rests on four veneered curved legs. The front legs have a finely scalloped chamfer and are veneered across.
18th century.
Original lock, key and bronzes.
The desk is in perfect condition, beautifully crafted with its period colors.
This piece of furniture is certainly of German manufacture, but very close to the French border.
