A Fantasy Seascape, Marten Van Valckenborch (1535 - 1612) Circle

A fantasy Mediterranean seascape with harbour, moored ships and figures along the coast, and villages in the distance.

Marten van Valckenborch (Belgium 1535 - Frankfurt 1612) circle
- Trace of a monogram in the lower left-hand corner (on the box carried on the shoulders of a figure) - detail in the pictures

oil on canvas (60 x 104 cm. - framed 77 x 121 cm.)

The proposed painting, which projects us onto a fabulous coastal view animated by many figures bustling about in their varied daily activities, is treated with what are among the hallmarks of 17th century Flemish landscape painting: imagination, attention to detail and particular use of colour.

These concepts took full shape towards the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century, thanks to the illustrative experiences promoted by names such as Gillis van Coninxloo (Antwerp 1544 - Amsterdam 1607) and, above all, Marten van Valckenborch (Belgium 1535 - Frankfurt 1612), from whose pictorial inventions our author must certainly have drawn.

Remarkable are the compositional and stylistic similarities of the canvas under examination with their iconographic inventions; by way of comparison we can mention the 'Wide mountainous landscape, river, with Abraham and Angels', with monogram and date 'L VV FECIT 1610' passed at Christie's on 8 December 2010 (https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-5391355/?intObjectID=5391355), also a work characteristic of Marten van Valckenborch's late style.

We find his great skill in photographing landscapes, which manage to encompass both everyday details and extraordinary natural contexts, appealing directly to the imagination.

A meticulous and analytical reality, in which ample space is given to the fantastic, almost fairy-tale dimension.

CONSERVATION The canvas is in an excellent state of preservation. It presents an old reintelo.
