Floral lacelike surface ornament became one of the distinguishing characteristics of Umayyad Spanish style (examples can also be seen in textiles and ivory carvings of the period). This capital, that once crowned a column, has four identical sides. Decorative vegetal stems climb, intertwine, and spread out to the sides, giving the stone a sense of lightness. Spain, Andalusian Umayyad period: late 10th – beginning of 11th century. Limestone. The volutes (scroll-like ornaments) sticking out on the corners have disappeared
