Portrait of a young breton woman - Maurice Chabas (1862-1947)

Portrait of a young Breton woman, painted a fresco.
Maurice Chabas was born in Nantes in 1862 into a wealthy merchant family. Like his brother Paul, he attended painting classes at the Académie Julian, where his teachers included Bouguereau and Jules Adler. While Paul pursued a career as a portraitist, Maurice followed the Symbolist movement. Close to Sâr Péladan, he took part in all the Salons de la Rose-Croix from 1892 to 1897. He naturally turned to landscapes, often lending them a particular contemplative and mystical atmosphere.
The portrait we present betrays the painter's love of Brittany, a region that greatly inspired him, and takes on that dimension of enigmatic serenity characteristic of the artist.
