Antonin Carlès was born in 1851 in Gimont (Gers) his training as a sculptor began in Marseille and Toulouse before arriving in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and receiving the teachings of François Jouffroy and Ernest Hiolle. A member of the Société des Artistes Français, he participated in the Salon from 1878 to 1914.
