Gold ring with a Roman intaglio of wrestling Erotes. 1st - 2nd century AD.

A gold ring set with a Roman carnelian intaglio of two wrestling Erotes.

The intaglio dates to the 1st - 2nd century AD, the gold ring is 20th century.

The intaglio measures 1.35 x 1.2cm.

Ring size N UK / 6.5 US.

The intaglio is carved with two wrestling Erotes. When Aphrodite (Greek goddess of love, beauty and pleasure) was born from the sea she was greeted by the twin love-gods (Erotes) Eros and Himeros (god of sexual desire). The wrestling scene was interpreted by one scholar of ancient Greek art as “two wrestling Erotes, may personify the interior struggles and doubts of the bride”.
