Tondino in majolica of Urbino attributed to Guido Durantino, 16th century

Tondino, small majolica dish from Urbino with "a istoriato" decoration of a mythological scene depicting Jupiter, transformed into a satyr to seduce Antiope, lifting a sheet and discovering Antiope's beauty*, a winged lover on the right and a lakeside landscape in the background. Bearded Jupiter is also depicted in the clouds with his specter and lightning.
Inscribed on the back "Jone transformato insatiro".

Attributed to the painter Guido Durantino in Fontana's workshop circa 1555/1560. Mid 16th century.

Diameter: 22.7 cm. A resumed chip and a small lack of yellow on the border fillet.

*Antiope, of extraordinary beauty, falls prey to Jupiter, who transforms himself into a satyr to unite with her. This is an explicit representation of desire.
Ovid, Metapmorphoses VI, 1 1 1.
