Ink, mineral pigments, gofun and gold leaf on paper.
The scene represents a couple of pheasants and small birds among red camellias, peonies and snow-capped pines. It symbolizes the transition from winter to spring. The pine that does not lose its needles represents the sustainability of nature in winter while camellias and peonies represent the rebirth of spring.
Paper mounting, silk brocade borders and lacquered wood border on a pine inner frame.
Japan, Edo period, late 18th century.
