India, Kelala, silver necklace with amulets, late 19th century

Late-19th century silver necklace, made in Southern India, in the state of Kerala. Composed of 9 talismanic amulets, called Ta’viz, made of a traditional resin and encased in sheets of silver. They are strung on a handwoven wheat chain with 10 additional beads. The shape of the closure allows to wear it as a necklace but in Kerala, they were often used as belts.
Nice patina showing that the piece has been used. French control halmarks.
