Carl Reichert was born in Vienna in 1836.
He is the son of the animal painter, portrait painter and lithographer Heinrich Reichert.

He studied at the Academy of Drawing in Graz, before continuing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and then residing in Rome. On his return to Austria, he painted landscapes, urban scenes and animals, specializing more particularly in the making of portraits of dogs and cats.

In 1874, he became a member of the Vienna Artists' Union and exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus.

During his career, he used the pseudonym J. Hartung. He died in Graz in 1918.
