A parcel-gilt shell shaped cup (Muschelpokal)

Augsburg, circa1650

By Hans Otto (married 1639 – died 1678)

Literature:
Helmut Seling. Die Kunst der Augsburger Goldschmiede 1529-1868. Munich 1980, tome III, n°1491.

Two similar "Muschelpokale" by Hans Otto are preserved in Museum. One is in the Landesmuseum in Zurich (inv. n°456) and the other is in the Kremlin Museum in Moscow (inv n°1313). Other examples from the same model were also made by goldsmiths such as Johann Seutter I from Augsburg.

A very similar cup is painted in several still lives by Abraham van Beyeren (1621–1690), such as the ones in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, dated 1654, or in the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, dated 1666.
