Child with parrot, German school of the early eighteenth century

Panel representing a child or teenager, a parrot on his arm.

The child wears a wig, he wears an elegant blue coat, silk stockings and a shirt adorned with fine lace. He sits on a purple Genoa velvet seat embroidered with gold and holds his arm leaning on a table covered with a cloth. On the table, a precious finely carved wooden mirror of flowers and human and golden figures is leaning against a fictional wall. His hat, a tricorn adorned with an embroidered ribbon, is placed on the table, as well as an open sachet of almonds.
The child holds on his left hand a superb parrot with red, blue and gold plumage, to whom he strains an almond. A sheet delimits the scene in the background, which itself is part of a window frame.

By its majesty and symbolism, this child portrait with parrot undoubtedly fits into the current of aristocratic portraits of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century.
Far from constituting an official and cold portrait, however, there emerges an indescribable emotion, a great sweetness and a certain poetry.

Oil on panel.

German school of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century.

Beautiful carved wooden frame and gilded (39 cm x 44 cm).
