Vase, Josef Hoffmann, Johann Loetz Witwe, Neuroth außen Schwarz decoration, ca. 1911
For their winter exhibition in 1911, the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry (ÖMKI) commissioned several designs from Josef Hoffmann. Our vase’s reduced depiction of bellflowers with foliage, together with a strictly geometric pattern, precisely reflect his form language. The production of this piece was a technical challenge. The colorless glass body of the vase was first underglazed “Neuroth”, then overlaid in dark brown. In many steps, the brown overlay was then etched with acid, a process in which it is particularly difficult to obtain straight lines and geometric patterns.
