A bronze sculpture depicting a tiger captured in a powerful, dynamic pose, its body arched and its jaws wide open in a mighty roar, signed Maruki Sei.
The anatomical modelling effectively conveys the animal’s muscular tension and energy, while the rich dark-brown patina is enhanced by gilded eyes, lending particular expressiveness to its gaze. Signed in relief beneath the base, within a square cartouche. The work is mounted on its original finely carved wooden stand, whose sinuous contours complement and accentuate the composition’s sense of movement.
The Maruki Company, active in Japan during the Meiji period (1868–1912), was renowned for the refinement and considerable weight of its sculptures and is regarded as one of the leading producers of Japanese bronze works of the Meiji era.
