Bronze statue with a silvered patina from the late 19th century, made after Emmanuel Frémiet's 1887 creation and exhibited at the 1889 Salon. Saint Louis is shown crowned, holding the royal scepter of justice in his right hand, and carrying a reliquary chest inspired by the architecture of the Sainte-Chapelle. The base features the initials SL, the royal coat of arms (fleur-de-lis), and a medallion symbolizing the sun and the pyramids of Egypt. The signature E FREMIET is also present. The base is made of red griotte marble, consistent with editions by Charles More, Frémiet's founder-publisher until 1910, before the Barbedienne foundry took over production of the models.
Overall very good condition considering its age, the indicated height includes the marble base. Emmanuel Frémiet, sculptor born in Paris (1824–1910), a major figure in 19th-century sculpture, student of Rude, appointed professor at the Museum of Natural History (succeeding Antoine Louis Barye), elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1892. E. Frémiet excelled in equestrian sculpture and historical figures, as well as medieval subjects, probably influenced by the architect Viollet-le-Duc.
