This remarkable wooden fork, dated 1790, is surmounted by a highly unusual nude figure with raised arms. Its anatomy appears deliberately ambiguous, combining female breasts with male genitalia. Rather than following the refined classical iconography of Hermaphroditus, the carving belongs more convincingly to the vernacular tradition of grotesque and symbolic figures incorporated into European domestic utensils.
