Pair of paintings: The Great Sorrow and Blind Man’s Buff
Oils on canvas, signed
Very fine pair of genre scenes by the celebrated French painter Camille Léopold Cabaillot-Lassalle, illustrating with great delicacy the world of childhood, one of the artist’s favorite themes.
The Great Sorrow depicts a touching scene in which a young woman comforts a little girl in tears, surrounded by two other children who have come to share this emotional moment. The tenderness of the attitudes, the delicacy of the expressions, and the warm light bathing the interior demonstrate Cabaillot-Lassalle’s talent for capturing the most sincere emotions of family life.
Blind Man’s Buff depicts a group of children absorbed in the famous traditional game. A blindfolded boy attempts to catch his companions, while a small dog joyfully animates the composition. The movement of the figures, the spontaneity of their gestures, and the convivial atmosphere perfectly illustrate the carefree joy of childhood.
Through these two complementary works, the artist subtly contrasts two facets of childhood: emotion and play. They reveal Cabaillot-Lassalle’s complete mastery of the art of telling a story through gesture, expression, and composition.

An elegant pair of paintings, characteristic of 19th century French genre painting, sought after for the quality of their execution, the freshness of their colors, and the timeless charm of their family scenes.
