Georges-Frédéric Rötig, a French painter and draughtsman, established himself as a major figure in animal painting at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Born in Paris in 1873, he developed an early fascination with both wild and domestic animals, which would become the central theme of his work.
He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under such renowned masters as Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme, two leading figures of French academic realism.
Throughout his career, Rötig distinguished himself through his remarkably precise observation of animals, capturing not only their anatomy but also their movement, behaviour and character. His drawings and paintings reveal an intimate knowledge of the animal world, combined with great technical skill and a strong sense of naturalism.
