Empire Period Sterling Silver Coffee Pot By J.B.S. LEFRANC, Paris, 1809–181

An elegant Empire period first-standard sterling silver (950/1000) coffee pot, crafted in Paris between 1809 and 1819 by the master silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Simon LEFRANC.

The exceptionally slender baluster-shaped body stands on a circular moulded spreading foot. Entirely plain, it is subtly ornamented only by a delicate beaded band at the base of the neck, emphasizing both the remarkable quality of the planishing and the harmony of its proportions.

The channel-form spout is enriched with four broad longitudinal flutes extending into an elegant moulded drop. Its refined design, exceptional craftsmanship and seamless integration with the body demonstrate the work of a highly accomplished silversmith.

The original ebony handle is secured by two silver mounts, the upper attachment taking the form of a restrained concentric rosette. The inset hinged cover is fitted with an elegant turned finial, while the hinge strap is delicately engraved with scrolling foliage against a finely matted ground.

The restrained elegance of the decoration, the exceptional purity of the silhouette and the remarkable quality of the planishing reflect a silversmith particularly attentive to the balance and refinement of form.

Stylistic Analysis

This coffee pot beautifully illustrates the transitional period that characterises Parisian silver during the opening decades of the nineteenth century.

Although its hallmarks firmly date it to the years 1809–1819, its formal vocabulary remains deeply rooted in the aesthetic developed during the Consulate.

The purity of its design, the restraint of its ornamentation and the exceptional quality of its execution favour elegance of proportion over decorative exuberance.

The remarkably slender profile of the body, the refined treatment of the spout and the harmonious integration of every element are more closely related to models produced during the opening years of the century than to the heavier, more monumental productions of the mature Empire style. This restrained elegance, inherited from the late eighteenth-century Neoclassical tradition, gives the piece a striking sense of modernity.

By virtue of both its design and execution, this coffee pot ranks among the finest currently documented examples of Jean-Baptiste-Simon LEFRANC's secular silver.

JEAN-BAPTISTE-SIMON LEFRANC (active 1798 – after 1819)

Jean-Baptiste-Simon LEFRANC belongs to the generation of Parisian silversmiths who contributed to the revival of French silver following the French Revolution.

He was admitted as a master silversmith in Paris in late 1798. He first established his workshop at 11 Cour Lamoignon, before moving to Cour de Harlay au Palais, where he is recorded during the opening decades of the nineteenth century.

His career developed during a period of profound artistic renewal, marked by the gradual abandonment of Louis XVI forms in favour of a more restrained Neoclassicism characteristic of the Consulate and the First Empire. A contemporary of Biennais, Odiot and Queillé, he participated in shaping the refined Neoclassical language that defines French silver of this period.

Although today he is chiefly remembered for his extensive production of ecclesiastical silver, secular works bearing his maker's mark are considerably rarer. Their quality of execution nevertheless reveals a master silversmith fully representative of the exceptional standards achieved by the leading Paris workshops of the early nineteenth century.

The present coffee pot is therefore an important example of this less familiar aspect of his production.

MUSEUMS AND PUBLIC COLLECTIONS

Among the documented works by Jean-Baptiste-Simon LEFRANC are:
• an armorial silver tray bearing the arms of the House of Bourbon-Condé, preserved in the Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly;
• a pair of silver cruets bearing the arms of Cardinal Joseph Fesch, Napoleon I's uncle, preserved in the Palais Fesch, Ajaccio;
• a silver sauceboat preserved in the Musée Magnin, Dijon;
• a monstrance dated 1818, signed "LEFRANC Orfèvre Cour de Harlay au Palais n°11 à Paris";
• numerous chalices, patens, ciboria and other ecclesiastical silver preserved in French public collections or protected as Historic Monuments.

These works demonstrate the lasting institutional recognition of LEFRANC's production.
