17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
A fine set of four Louis XV ''à la Reine'' armchairs in walnut, featuring rich, high-relief carvings of acanthus leaves and small floral motifs adorning the seat rails, backrests, and upper legs.
The armrests, featuring upholstered arm pads, rest on recessed, ''coup de fouet'' supports that contribute to the overall harmony of the design.
The chairs stand on cabriole legs, with moldings that flow seamlessly into those of the shaped seat rails; the legs are embellished with carved acanthus leaves.
To complete their elegant appearance, the chairs are upholstered in beautiful Louis XV period Gobelins tapestry, featuring scenes of gallantry on the backrests and illustrations from ''La Fontaine's Fables'' on the seats (The Wolf and the Stork ; The Frog Who Wished to Be as Big as the Ox ; The Dog Carrying His Master's Dinner ; The Crow Wishing to Imitate the Eagle)
