This ‘scholar’s weight’ (or paperweight) was used to keep rice paper or silk flat whilst writing and painting. These refined objects are often carved from fine materials such as precious wood, polished stone, jade, bronze or porcelain. Along with the ‘Four Treasures of the Study’ (paper, brush, ink and inkstone), this object was indispensable in the studio of the scholar.
