Beautiful pair of carved, painted and giltwood pedestals in the Régence style, composed of a circular central shaft adorned with projecting gadrooned rings and acanthus leaves, surrounded by three double-curved console-shaped supports highlighted with acanthus-leaf culots, carved with channels and embellished with gilt fillets. Topped with molded Breccia marble, they rest on a tripartite base with concave sides.
This model is a classic of the decorative arts of the first half of the 18th century. It derives from the designs of ornamentists depicting torchères with hollowed shafts and scrolling supports intended for royal interiors. Originally, these pieces of furniture were used to hold candelabra (hence the name torchère) to illuminate galleries, or to display bronzes, Chinese porcelain, and busts.
