An imposing 19th century Trumeau Mirror from Château de Beloeil, Belgium

This imposing trumeau consists of two harmoniously integrated sections. Four-fifths of the piece is taken up by a large mirror with glazing bars, framed by carved side panels around which rich plant motifs wind. The top is adorned with a substantial rocaille decoration, whilst the side panels are joined by a series of double volutes entwined with foliage scrolls, accentuating the decorative momentum of the composition.

The upper section forms an openwork pediment, revealing the white-painted wood upon which the gilded decorative elements rest, divided vertically by rocaille ornaments extending those of the mirror and crowned with a carved shell. The two areas deliberately left unadorned provide a visual respite that balances the profusion of ornamentation. The whole is framed by carved wood combining volutes, foliage, acanthus leaves and rocaille motifs in a style typical of Louis XV.

The work is distinguished by a highly symmetrical composition, yet enlivened by the supple, organic movement characteristic of the rocaille style.
