Still Life with a Vase of Flowers in an Interior.
The work features a refined floral composition set within an elegant embossed and gilded metal vase, a distinctive and highly prized element in the work of Giacomo Recco, founder of the famous dynasty of Neapolitan painters. On a barely visible support surface, the light strikes the botanical variety from the side among which anemones, tulips and roses can be distinguished standing them out against a dark background reminiscent of Caravaggio. The pictorial execution is meticulous: each petal is depicted with analytical precision, while the alternation between flowers in full bloom and buds creates a compositional dynamism typical of early Neapolitan Baroque. This painting represents an important addition to Giacomo Recco's oeuvre. Although the work is a recent discovery at the Galleria La Bocchella and has never appeared in previous publications, its stylistic features unmistakably trace it back to the hand of the master. Unlike the more exuberant naturalism of his sons Giuseppe and Giovan Battista, Giacomo here maintains that archaic composure and formal clarity that made him famous. The "silence" that envelops the composition and the almost tactile rendering of the vases (often decorated with ancient motifs or pods) are recurring stylistic signatures, detectable in direct comparisons with certain works preserved in prestigious private and museum collections. The management of the shadows, which softly envelop the flowers at the back to highlight those in the foreground, demonstrates a technical skill that elevates this painting to a piece of notable interest for specialized collectors.
