Une Merveilleuse du Directoire signed Francois Boudiot

Portrait of a Young Lady in a High-Waisted Dress, Seated in a Landscape, Black chalk, stump drawing, and white highlights on paper . Signed lower left: Bodiot

Depicted half-length, an elegant young woman sits in a shaded landscape, her left arm delicately resting on a stone parapet, while her right hand makes a graceful gesture. Dressed in a light, high-waisted dress, its transparency subtly rendered by white highlights, she fully embodies the Neoclassical ideal of femininity. Her face, with its regular features and expression of gentle melancholy, stands out against a wooded background rendered with great delicacy. The ethereal treatment of the foliage, achieved through the masterful use of stump drawing, lends the composition a poetic atmosphere characteristic of the Directoire period.
This drawing exquisitely illustrates the evolution of female portraiture at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, when the influence of Jacques-Louis David ushered in a return to classical simplicity. The clothing, inspired by antiquity, and the restrained composition place the work during the Consulate or the very beginning of the Empire.
The drawing is distinguished by the quality of its modeling, achieved through the subtle application of black chalk and shading, enhanced by delicate highlights. This technique, prized in Parisian studios around 1800, allows for a remarkable softness in the rendering of flesh and fabrics.
