History:
Émile Gallé was the founder and first president of the École de Nancy in 1901.
Born into a family involved in both art and commerce, he became one of the most significant figures in the applied arts of his time and one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau.
He was also a precursor in the field of genetics and evolution in relation to the plant world. His work, largely unknown to the general public, is nonetheless highly relevant, as it predates that of Gregor Mendel and anticipates its main principles.
At the entrance to his workshop in Nancy, one could read the motto: “My roots are deep in the woods.”
