Woman at her Toilet, charcoal, white chalk, and pastel on paper, signed lower right, by François Joseph Guiguet.
Born in 1860 in Corbelin in the Isère region to a carpenter father, Joseph Guiguet showed an early talent for drawing, which led him to study at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, then in Paris in Cabanel's studio. There he met Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, who taught him the art of monumental painting and gave him the opportunity to work on several projects.
Although Guiguet fulfilled numerous portrait commissions and produced lithographs for Estampe Moderne and Estampe Nouvelle, he remained deeply attached to depicting simple moments in life. His works celebrate the intimacy and sensitivity of human beings, giving them a silent, almost sacred power.
In this drawing, the influence of Edgar Degas is evident, both in the choice of subject and in the treatment, revealing the delicacy and poetry that characterize Guiguet's art. Each stroke and each nuance testify to his attentive gaze and his ability to transform everyday life into a moment of suspended emotion.
