Having begun experimenting with drawing at the age of twelve, and soon after with painting, he enrolled four years later at the Rouen School of Fine Arts. He then joined the open-air painting classes of Joseph Delattre and was already travelling to Croisset on Sundays to paint the banks of the Seine.
A favorite subject of Narcisse Guilbert, the banks of the Seine—both downstream and upstream from Rouen—are among his finest works.
