Offered by La Crédence
Two women draped in the Antique style, each holding an oil lamp. English School, label on the reverse John J. Napier (exhibited in London from 1856 to 1876 at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution). Museums: London (National Portrait Gallery), Victoria.
This scene actually represents the episode of the Wise Virgins and the Foolish Virgins, a parable from the Gospel according to Matthew. It illustrates the call of Jesus Christ to vigilance by following the principles of fidelity to his word, mercy and charity in order to gain, after death, the Kingdom of God rather than perdition in hell.
Very beautiful Neo-Renaissance frame.
