Oil on copper depicting Saint Francis of Paola, Italian hermit (1416-1507), founder of the Order of Minims, summoned to France by Louis XI.
Painted on a gold background, still characteristic of medieval painting, this representation of the hermit monk holding his staff confirms the iconography of Saint Francis through the presence of the inscription "Charitas" in the sky.
The exquisite detail of the saint's face and hands is noteworthy.
On the back, an old inscription on paper provides the following information: "This copy was made from the original by the hermit that Louis XI kept in his cabinet."
Late 16th-century work.
Good condition.
