Pair of Italian Commodes Bearing the Effigy of Louis XVIII, Verona, c. 1795

In 1795, following the death of Louis XVII, Louis XVIII, brother of Louis XVI, proclaimed himself King of France from his exile in Verona. This rare pair of commodes, crafted in the second half of 1795, reflects this pivotal moment in history.

Description:
An exceptional pair of sauteus commodes, each featuring two drawers separated by crossbars. Their rich marquetry combines precious woods—rosewood, walnut, plum, satinwood, boxwood, stained sycamore, and scorched ash—to create a sumptuous décor of floral rosettes, leafy scrollwork, fluted motifs, and intricate inlays. The ornamentation, in finely chased and gilded bronze as well as repoussé gilt brass, prominently displays the effigy of Louis XVIII. The tapered legs and tops in Rosso di Verona marble—a durable and decorative limestone quarried in the province and prized for centuries—complete this ensemble of rare elegance.
