Study of dogs by Adriaen de Gryef (1670 - 1722)

Oil on paper laid down on panel by the painter Adriaen de Gryef (Antwerp, 1670 – Brussels, 1722). A Flemish painter from Antwerp, he specialized in landscapes and still lifes, particularly in small-format works. He is believed to have been a pupil of Frans Snyders. He was especially active in Antwerp and Brussels.

This study of five dogs (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) is emblematic of the artist’s work. The painting is unsigned, as was often the practice at the time, but the attribution is certain.
