Flemish landscape, early 17th century (circa 1600)

Oil on panel depicting a pastoral scene in a Flemish rural landscape. The composition is organized around a group of peasants and shepherds engaged in various daily activities, mainly related to sheep herding.

The foreground is treated with particular care given to gestures, postures, and exchanges between the figures.

The landscape opens into depth onto a rolling countryside, punctuated by rural buildings and a wide horizon structured by a cloudy sky in light tonalities.

The background suggests a gradual transition between genre scenes and landscape, characteristic of Flemish painting at the beginning of the 17th century.

The palette is dominated by warm and vivid Italianate tones.

The whole composition belongs to the Antwerp tradition of the early 17th century, showing a remarkable influence of Jacopo Bassano.

Tortoiseshell frame.

Dimensions with frame: 65 × 50 cm
