Pierre Hodé (Rouen, 1889 – Paris, 1942)
Pierre Hodé’s painting stands apart from that of the artists around him. Like many painters of strong character, he drew from different pictorial movements while remaining true to his own direction. Three distinct phases can be identified in his work, with gradual fusions accompanying each new stylistic tendency.
This canvas depicting a Tugboat in Dieppe, painted around 1925, is treated in a “cubist-inspired” manner. This approach, developed from around 1920 onward, would continue for eleven years.
