Antique Mughal jewelry box
India, Rajasthan, 18th century.
Carved cedar wood.
Forged iron reinforcements.
Measurements: 37 x 26 x 31 cm.
Excellent condition.
Rare and fascinating wooden dowry box, entirely carved with archaic propitiatory motifs. It comes from the Indian region of Rajasthan and was used to contain the jewels that the bride's family gave as a dowry for her daughter's wedding. The particular shape of this precious container is typical of Mughal tradition, with the small door that opens in the central part of the roof-shaped lid. The box is in excellent condition with a splendid patina of time and is original in all its parts, without any restoration.
