Robert Bouquillon studied successively at the École des Beaux-Arts in Douai from 1940 to 1942, at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1943 to 1945 where he was awarded a first prize in drawing, and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. Twice shortlisted for the Critics' Prize alongside Bernard Buffet, Bernard Lorjou, and Serge Poliakoff, he was also a pianist at the cabaret L'Écluse on the Quai des Grands-Augustins in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, accompanying and befriending young artists who performed there at the time, such as Barbara, Catherine Sauvage, Jean-Pierre Darras, and Philippe Noiret.4
After living at 2 rue Mizon in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, then in Lambres-lez-Douai while teaching at the École des Beaux-Arts in Douai, he chose in the 1970s to settle in the Gard region, first in Collias, then on Avenue Louis-Alteirac in Uzès.
For a long time, he favored depictions of the North in his works, featuring mines, barges, canals, beaches, and rain (The Umbrellas), before later painting Étretat, Venice, and the Camargue, as well as, in a musical spirit, tributes to Mozart, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Duke Ellington.
He died two weeks after his wife, Germaine, on February 18, 2013, in Uzès.
