Pair of Covered Apothecary Chevrettes in Faience, circa 1760
Pair of glazed earthenware apothecary chevrettes on spreading foot, decorated in polychrome with Latin inscriptions framed in phylacteries. Each is surmounted by stylized “Indian” heads surrounded by fruits and scrolling foliage, flanked by floral motifs including solanaceous blossoms (potato flowers), tulips, and roses. The undersides of the handles feature grotesque heads in low relief. Original pewter hinges.
