Portrait of Miss Thayer half-length, in a white dress velvet jacket and drapery, a window behind her.
Sir Thomas Lawrence (13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) was an English portrait painter and collector. Lawrence was the leading British portrait painter of the early 19th century, portraying most of the important personalities of the day in his polished and flattering style. He was a child prodigy and largely self-taught; at the age of 10 he was making accomplished portraits in crayon.
His technical facility and rapid and enormous public success should not obscure the originality and self-consciousness of his imagination. He also formed a spectacular collection of Old Master drawings, and was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and becoming its fourth president in 1820.
Lawrence''s influence on British portraiture is evident in the works of artists like Thomas Phillips, Margaret Sarah Carpenter and David Wilkie who adopted his techniques and stylistic choices.
The present picture is a hitherto unrecorded studio version after the original recorded portrait of a Miss Thayer ( NPG Heinz Library)
This fine work is in excellent condition and is offered ready to hang and enjoy in its original hand carved and gilded frame, which is itself a work of art.
