Delphin ENJOLRAS (1865–1945)
Return of the Bulls in Camargue
Oil on canvas, signed lower left.
Dimensions: 75 x 45 cm (without frame) – 69 x 94 cm (with frame).
Period giltwood frame.
In this luminous composition, Delphin Enjolras momentarily turns away from his intimate interiors and scenes of women by lamplight to focus instead on the landscapes of southern France. Beneath a sky set ablaze by the last light of sunset, a herd of bulls makes its way back to the manade, guided by two gardians barely visible in the dimness of the path. The evening light reflects on the damp ground, revealing the artist’s mastery in capturing atmosphere and reflection.
This work, executed with great delicacy, bears witness to Enjolras’s sensitive eye for rural life and the evocative landscapes of the South of France.
