Carved in fine layered agate, the oval cameo portrays a Roman nobleman in profile to the left, possibly representing a Julio-Claudian prince. The sitter is shown wearing a draped chiton across his shoulder, his features idealised in the classical manner with neatly defined curls and a serene expression. The sculptural modelling of the face and garment folds exemplifies the refined classicism of Italian Renaissance gem-carving, which often revived imperial Roman portrait types in homage to antiquity.
The cameo is set within a smooth, broad gold bezel of contemporary 20th-century manufacture, fashioned in solid 14 carat gold and struck ‘14K’ to the inner shank. The ring’s generous proportions and polished surface provide a dignified and harmonious setting for the antique gem.
Condition
In fine condition overall, with a minor hairline crack visible to the right-hand side of the cameo between 3 and 4 o’clock.
