A splendid oil painting on panel depicting the Crucifixion of Christ.
The scene, as per tradition, shows Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of the cross, sharing her grief with the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Behind the Virgin, on the left, are the pious women, Mary of Clopas, the Virgin's sister, and Mary Salome, the mother of James and John. On the right, Roman soldiers in their armor observe the scene. The pictorial finesse in the details of the figures, the vegetation on the ground, and the blue sky dotted with clouds is remarkable.
But the feature that clearly distinguishes this depiction of Christ on the Cross is the exceptional chromaticism and the truly unusual luminosity of the panel in depicting this dramatic episode.
The same chromatic tones used by the French Limoges Masters for their enamels and porcelain are evident, with an excellent combination of colors creating bold contrasts and a perfect three-dimensional effect. The perfect condition allows for a complete appreciation of the work down to the smallest detail.
