Bascoulergue – Charming Signed Tapestry from the 19th Century Aubusson

19th-century Aubusson Tapestry, an exceptional piece whose execution evokes the grand themes of the Renaissance and romantic tales. This work is remarkably signed "BASCOULERGUE" in a central cartouche, confirming its provenance from this renowned Aubusson manufacturer.

Scene and Composition
The tapestry features a richly detailed narrative and gallant scene:

The Foreground: A group of noble figures in Renaissance/Louis XIII-era costumes descends a stone staircase leading to a stream. The dynamic composition centers on two ladies in sumptuous gowns, engaged in a soft conversation or a moment of concern.

The Setting: The scene takes place in the garden of an elegant château (visible in the background, left). Centrally positioned, a stone pedestal is adorned with a statue of a wild beast (bear or boar), adding a touch of mystery or an allusion to a fable.

The Detail: The water in the foreground is rippling, and two turtles or aquatic creatures can be seen swimming.

Colors and Border
Palette: The tapestry boasts beautiful color preservation, favoring the rich, deep tones of the 19th century: navy blues, carmine reds, forest greens, and gold yellows for the clothing and foliage.

Framing: The entire piece is magnified by a spectacular and luxuriant border set against a deep navy blue background. This border is adorned with garlands of flowers and fruit (pears, grapes) and gilded cartouches, typical of the opulence of the Napoleon III / Restoration style.

This tapestry is a textile work of great finesse, ideal for lending a historical, romantic, and elegant character to a drawing-room, entrance hall, or library.
In keeping with tradition, this magnificent tapestry has undergone deep cleaning, been fitted with a hand-stitched linen backing, and subject to a meticulous inspection by our experts in our artisanal workshop. It is now ready to adorn your interior.
