Zacharie Noterman or Zacharie Notermann or Zacharias Noterman, Ghent 1820 and Paris 1890, is a Belgian painter and engraver, specializing in the painting of antics, scenes of monkeys carrying out human activities, as well as in paintings of dogs.Son of Jean Noterman, painter-decorator, and Marie-Catherine Haelterman, he was trained by his older brother, Emmanuel Norterman, before continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
He lived for a time in Antwerp with his brother before settling in Paris.
He specializes in humorous paintings depicting in particular monkeys dressed in costumes and practicing human activities (trades, hobbies and pleasures of the time, such as playing dice, music or smoking).
He also produces paintings representing dogs and cats, as well as circus scenes and engravings presenting subjects similar to his paintings.
During his career, he participated several times in the Salon of painting and sculpture in Paris.
He died in Paris in 1890.
