Large earthenware vase with stucco decoration, Italy late 18th century

This monumental earthenware vase decorated with mounted stucco is undoubtedly one of a kind. In a way, it embodies an ‘arte povera’ solution that aims to achieve a similar effect by replacing a valuable material with a less precious one. The plant-shaped stucco that serves as a base and the leaf-shaped handles replace the classic mounted bronze. Originally, the stucco on this vase was gilded, producing the effect of a classic mounted bronze. Despite the delicate and fragile mounting, the vase is very well preserved. HD photos are available.
