Gold Ring with Silver Inlaid Crescent Moon and Stars

Roman, circa 3rd Century A.D.

Measurements
• Ring size: UK 2 / US 9 / EU 60
• Outer measurements: 2.8 × 2.4 cm
• Weight: 18.6 grams

A solid Roman gold ring with a broad, tapering hoop and an integral raised octagonal bezel. The bezel is finely inlaid with silver using the niello technique to depict a crescent moon flanked by two eight-pointed stars. The inlay is crisp and well-defined, standing in striking contrast to the rich yellow hue of the gold. The ring’s substantial weight and carefully modelled form attest to its high-status function, both as ornament and as a talismanic object.

The celestial motif may be associated with the moon goddess Selene, frequently represented with a crescent moon and stars, often interpreted as Phosphorus (morning star) and Hesperus (evening star). Such imagery held symbolic connections to cycles of death and rebirth, and to divine protection, making it a potent and personal emblem for its wearer.
