18th-Century Chest of Drawers Stamped P. A. Galligne

A delightful small chest of drawers, stamped P. A. Galligne for Pierre-Antoine Galligné, who became a Master on October 5, 1767.
Curved on the front and sides, it opens with four drawers in three rows and is adorned with marquetry of rosewood reserves on an amaranth background, highlighted with fillets.
It is topped with a pinkish-gray marble molding with a bec-de-corbin following the curve of the front and sides.
Finely chiseled and gilded bronze trim on the drawers and base, as well as on the pinched front uprights, topped with corner drops, and on the feet mounted with sabots. To complete its charm and elegance, its small proportions (H. 87 cm x W. 87 cm x D. 47 cm) are noteworthy, making it a pleasant living room piece.
The P. A. Galligne stamp and the JME (Jurande des Maîtres Ébénistes) hallmark are affixed under the marble on the right front upright.
In his workshop on Rue de Charenton, Pierre-Antoine Galligné created very classical, even traditionalist, furniture, since some of his chests of drawers—like the one we are presenting—feature the straight or tomb-like shapes of the Regency period. He used rosewood, amaranth, and violetwood veneers, and occasionally, floral marquetry.
