17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Walnut panel carved in high relief, with polychrome decoration and sgraffito gilding, illustrating the theme of the Fall as Adam accepts the fruit Eve offers him.
At the center of the composition is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, around which the serpent, symbol of temptation, is coiled. Various fruits mingle with the thick foliage.
Adam and Eve are depicted on either side of the trunk. Eve holds the forbidden fruit in her left hand to offer it to Adam.
The trees on either side of the central scene depict the Garden of Eden as described in the Bible, full of "every kind of tree, pleasant to the sight and good for food."
