Mid-19th Century Cloisonné Enamel Fireplace Set, Circa 1860

This mantelpiece is a magnificent example of the art of clockmaking, typical of 19th-century luxury pieces, strongly inspired by the Louis XV style. Its cloisonné enamel decoration, predominantly turquoise in color with floral motifs, reveals high-quality goldsmithing. The vivid colors, particularly shades of blue, green, and pink, evoke champlevé enamel techniques, highly prized in the 19th century for their luxurious and sophisticated effects.

The clock is mounted on a base supported by four feet, giving it elegant stability. The body of the clock is flanked by two finely chiseled gilded putti, with subtle details in their expressions, highlighting the high-quality French craftsmanship. The upper part of the clock, reminiscent of an ornamental vase, is also decorated with floral motifs in cloisonné enamel. It is topped with a finely crafted lid, completing the sumptuous appearance of the piece.

The two gilt bronze and cloisonné enamel candelabras each feature two beautifully decorated light arms supported by gilt bronze putti. Each is positioned in a graceful pose, holding the base of the light arms, with finely crafted wings adding a touch of elegance and harmony. The candelabra bases are adorned with cloisonné enamel in shades of turquoise, blue, and pink, with floral motifs. The contrast between the turquoise color of the enamel and the gilt bronze creates a striking visual effect, enhancing the overall elegance of the piece. The light arms terminate in bobeches also adorned with cloisonné enamel, echoing the motifs on the base, and are intricately carved in the shape of acanthus leaves and scrolls. Each candelabra features two candlesticks, giving them an elegant and balanced symmetry.
